School advocates teachers’ welfare, competence

The Blooming Greens, Lagos, said education should be strengthened by employing qualified teachers and providing ongoing support through welfare packages and training.

In a statement made during the celebrations for World Teacher’s Day and the International Day of the Girl Child, the CEO of Blooming Greens in Lagos, Mrs Susan Yamah, stressed that teaching should not be viewed as a last resort but as a vital vocation focused on sharing knowledge with children.

She said, “To positively enhance our education system, priority should be given to qualified teachers, along with consistent support through welfare packages and training.

“This will create an enabling environment for teachers to carry out their duties effectively and succeed. Furthermore, there must be standards in the establishment of private schools, and existing guidelines should be strictly adhered to.”

A teacher at Blooming Greens and the recent recipient of the prestigious title of Best Approved Private School Teacher in Nigeria, Mrs Anuoluwapo Oluwole, echoed Yamah’s sentiments.

She highlighted that educating the girl child is tantamount to educating an entire nation, advocating for increased educational opportunities for girls to help them thrive in all aspects of life.

While acknowledging that awareness around the importance of educating girls has improved, she noted that more needs to be done in other regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, where awareness remained low.

Oluwole also called for improved policies in the education sector to eliminate malpractices and create a supportive environment for teachers.
