Data centre executives advocate eco-friendly solutions

In a significant shift towards environmental responsibility, data centre executives are increasingly advocating eco-friendly solutions to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.

They made the call recently during the Nigerian Peering & Interconnection Forum in Lagos, where top executives from leading data center companies discussed innovations and challenges shaping the future of Africa’s digital landscape.

The Chief Executive Officer of Rack Centre, Lars Johannisson, while speaking during a panel session themed, ‘Evolving Data Centre Landscape: Innovations, Challenges, and Future Trends’, said his firm is dedicated to driving Nigeria’s digital future through advanced technology and infrastructure solutions.

He added that as the leading Tier III carrier and cloud-neutral data center in West Africa, Rack Centre has invested in cutting-edge, AI-ready facilities that balance scalability and sustainability, positioning Nigeria as an attractive digital hub in Africa.

“We are committed to building resilient infrastructure that meets Nigeria’s growing demand for digital services,” Johannisson said. “Our facilities ensure seamless connectivity even in challenging environments, making Nigeria an increasingly reliable location for digital investment,” Johannisson said.

Rack Centre’s commitment to sustainable energy was highlighted as Johannisson shared details of the company’s LGS2 facility, which integrates solar power to support energy-efficient operations.

He described it as one of Africa’s most energy-efficient data centers, stressing that the eco-friendly approach aligns with Rack Centre’s long-term vision of promoting sustainable digitization in the region.

The Chief Executive Officer of Kasi Cloud Data Centres, Johnson Agogbua, and General Manager for Technical Solutions and Managed Networks at MainOne, Oluwasayo Oshadami, echoed the call for more sustainable practices.

They pointed out that energy efficiency and adaptable infrastructure are essential to support the increasing data demands of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
