Experts discuss fake news, cyberbullying at forum



Experts convened at the 5th edition of the Bodex Social Media Hangout in Lagos to discuss the pressing issues of fake news, cyberbullying, and their far-reaching impact on society.

The event, themed “Social Media: The Influence, Power, and Impact,” brought together influencers, dignitaries, and stakeholders from various sectors.

A statement on Sunday indicated that the event was moderated by Florence Hungbo and featured a keynote address by the Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals to the Lagos State Governor, Dr. OreOluwa Finnih.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Finnih underscored the Lagos State Government’s commitment to leveraging social media for societal growth and well-being.

The governor reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s vision of creating a digital ecosystem that promotes economic growth, cultural exchange, and societal well-being.

Discussions at the event emphasised the challenges of combating fake news, which continues to shape public opinion and disrupt social stability.

Panellists highlighted the rise of cyberbullying and its disproportionate effect on young people.

A digital strategist, Dotun Babatunde explored the influence of artificial intelligence on the social media landscape.

“We live in an attention economy where AI-driven algorithms amplify sensational content, but users must balance its opportunities and challenges,” Babatunde said.

Associate Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, Dr. Tayo Popoola, described social media as a “double-edged sword,” noting its capacity to empower users while facilitating misinformation and toxicity.

“The challenge lies in managing its influence responsibly,” he added.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi discussed how social media supports law enforcement efforts.

“Social media is not just for entertainment; it’s a tool for solving crimes and enhancing community safety,” he said while sharing examples of cases solved through digital platforms.

Akin Olaniyan critiqued clout-chasing in the digital era, commenting, “Give any moron a smartphone, and everything becomes content. To such individuals, clout-chasing is an end in itself.”

He called for ethical standards in digital content creation and urged society to value substance over virality.

Notable contributors included CEO of Penzaarville Africa, Olufemi Oguntamu; founder of Lagos Life Influencer, Tomiwa Talabi; former editor at The PUNCH, Dayo Oketola; and actress Iyabo Ojo.
