N585m scandal: NANS hails Tinubu for ordering investigation

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has praised President Bola Tinubu for ordering an investigation into the alleged N585 million scandal involving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu.

The minister has been under fire for violating Nigeria’s Financial Regulations 2009, which emphasises separating public and personal money in government transactions.

On Sunday, the President, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, ordered a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the financial scandal.

Backing the President’s move, the President of NANS, Pedro Chibuzo Obi, said in a statement, “The scandal which has embedded the Humanitarian Ministry, if not addressed by the President, would have put the resolve of this administration to curb corruption to test.

“It is true that corruption is a major challenge to the country’s development and economic growth. And, as an association, we must commend the President for ordering an investigation into the scandal surrounding the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

“It has shown that President Tinubu will leave no stone untouched in the crusade against corruption. The President has not left us in doubt regarding his commitment to ridding Nigeria of corruption.

“One does not need a soothsayer to declare that this administration has been fighting corruption and that it will continue to fight corruption within the confines of the law.”

The NANS President however, urged Tinubu to ensure transparency in the investigation in order to further gain Nigerians confidence.
