Protests: Jigawa Police Command prosecutes 390 for looting, vandalization


The Jigawa State Police Command has prosecuted no fewer than 390 protesters out of the 400 suspects arrested during the recent anti-hunger protest in the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. A.T. Abdullahi made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen in Dutse on Thursday, saying the arrested protesters were from the 10 local government areas were violence was recorded during the protests.

He said the protesters were apprehended for vandalizing and looting government and public properties.

“We arrested 400 protesters and out of the number 390 have been prosecuted while the cases of the remaining suspects are still pending,” the commissioner said.

He said the the protesters vandalized and looted the state government fertilizer stores in Babura and Hadeja local government areas of the state.

He listed the local government areas where the protest took place as Kiyaye, Hadeja, Kazaure, Kaugama, Malammadori and Gumel, among others.

According to him, the Police were able to recover some of the looted properties from the suspects.

The CP commended officers and men of the Command for their efforts to contain the protest despite the shortage of manpower.
