Report eye ailments early, don urges Nigerians



The Head, Guiness Eye Centre, Lagos Univeristy Teaching Hospital, Dr Olufisayo Aribaba, has called on Nigerians to report eye ailments early to the hospital.

Speaking at the Commissioning of the Renovated Guinness Eye Centre building, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Aribaba advised that “We should take good care of our eyes. Make use of the opportunities that are available at the hospitals to stop using home remedies like urine, breast milk, acid water and others, people should also present themselves early to the hospital. In LUTH Guiness Eye Centre, our prices are  reasonable. I will enjoin all Nigerians to report early if they have any eye ailments and not to postpone going to the hospital, because delay can be dangerous.”

Chief Medical Director, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, explained that Guiness had been supportive for more than 30 years.

“So, today we are commissioning the renovation of the building.

“This is commendable and I sincerely hope that many Nigerians, individuals, cooperate bodies, multinationals, will learn from this. Over 11,000 surgeries had been done and we have also trained a lot of people. We have trained more than 4,000 medical students, 70 residents doctors’ specialist were also trained here and many nurses.

Board Chair, Dr Omobola Johnson, added that about three decades ago, Guinness Nigeria Plc constructed, equipped, and donated the Guinness Eye Centre to the Management of LUTH.

He revealed that annually, The Guinness Eye Centre attended to an average of 3,000 new patients and 15,000 old patients, and an average of 650 eye surgeries are performed annually at this center.

“Since its inception in 1994, the Guinness Eye Centre had played a pivotal role in the area of eye health services, providing comprehensive ophthalmic care services to a wide range of patients across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

“This facility has not only been a beacon of hope for those seeking specialised eye care but has also served as a crucial training center for undergraduate medical and ophthalmic nursing students. Moreover, it serves as an examination centre for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the International Council of Ophthalmology Examination,” said Johnson
