Sanwo-Olu, Pernod Ricard to unveil eco-friendly tree

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will unveil an eco-friendly Christmas tree built from upcycled bottles as part of efforts to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.

In a statement on Friday, wine company Pernod Ricard Nigeria which created the tree said it will be unveiled at the Ikeja City Mall car park on December 21, 2024.

Pernod Ricard dubbed the structure as “Lagos Upcycled Bottle Christmas Tree,” and noted it used about 2,500 empty Jameson bottles to create a festive display under the theme ‘Sustainability Meets Festivity.’

The initiative is designed to highlight the importance of circular economies while fostering community engagement.

Pernod Ricard Nigeria’s Managing Director, Michael Ehindero, described the project as a blend of art and responsibility, noting “The initiative seeks to promote sustainability and environmental awareness, showcasing creative re-use of materials to foster community engagement and social responsibility.”

The winemaker added the 12-day activation accompanying the unveiling will align with the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” underscoring the company’s commitment to inspiring young Nigerians toward sustainable practices.

Ehindero further explained that the partnership with Lagos State reflects Sanwo-Olu’s vision for sustainable development and a circular economy.

“This collaboration stems from Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to promoting a circular economy, which strongly aligns with Pernod Ricard Nigeria’s Sustainability and Responsibility Roadmap,” he declared.

Further, Pernod Ricard Nigeria disclosed it hoped the eco-friendly tree initiative will encourage Lagosians to embrace environmentally conscious practices during the festive season.
