UNESCO partners Infinix to train teachers, students in AI



The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation unveiled a two-day training program on Artificial Intelligence and robotics for Nigerian teachers and students.

 The event, held at the UNESCO office in Abuja, was organised in collaboration with Infinix Nigeria and Google.

In his address to the participants, UNESCO Head in Abuja, Abdourahamane Diallo, emphasised the critical role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education in fostering sustainable development.

He noted that STEM programs were vital for building the scientific, engineering, and research capacity needed to address global challenges such as environmental sustainability and public health.

“As important as STEM education is, many sub-Saharan African countries lack the necessary teaching tools, have outdated curricula in basic computer science, and suffer from poorly equipped laboratories.

 “Where laboratories do exist, they are often underused due to lack of electricity and trained teachers. Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and cloud computing offer promising solutions to enhance STEM education.”

Diallo explained that the training, which was the first in a series, aimed to address these challenges and strengthen the capacity of Nigerian teachers and students in AI and robotics.

 He announced that a second phase of the training, which would incorporate 3D printing, was already in the works.

Public Relations Manager for Infinix Nigeria, Oluwayemisi Ode, shared the company’s vision for the program, stating that the initiative was designed to spark the curiosity and creativity of Nigeria’s youth.

 “Through hands-on experiences in robotics and AI-powered applications, we are preparing the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers,” Ode said. “Our commitment goes beyond selling devices; it’s about empowering youth with the digital skills required to succeed in a global economy.”

The training, according to Ode, will expand across Nigeria, reaching students in cities, towns, and rural areas.

“By nurturing skills in AI and robotics, we are investing in a more resilient and innovative Nigeria,” she added.

Secretary General of the UNESCO National Commission in Nigeria, Dr Olagunju Idowu, praised the initiative as timely and relevant.

Speaking on his behalf, Secretary of the Nature and Science Sector, Frances Ezejiofor, noted that AI played a significant role in everyday life, from personalised online recommendations to voice assistants and telemedicine.

“AI is already transforming industries such as healthcare, banking, and entertainment.

 “It is vital for young people to recognise the importance of AI and its applications,” Ezejiofor said.

Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Muyibat Olodo, also underscored the importance of STEM education in global development.

Represented by her deputy director, Dr Stella Uhuegbu, Olodo urged the participants to take full advantage of the workshop to develop the skills needed for the future.

 “As a developing nation, Nigeria must harness the technological potential of its youth to stay competitive on the global stage.

“Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the minds of future generations, and their dedication to STEM education is essential for sustainable development,” Olodo stated.

The training program, supported by UNESCO, Infinix, and Google, marked an important step in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in AI and robotics, providing both teachers and students with the tools to excel in the evolving digital landscape.
