Upgrade mathematical centre to varsity, director urges NUC

The Director of the National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Promise Mebine, has called on the National Universities Commission to amend the establishment act of the centre by upgrading it to a university.

Mebine, who spoke on Friday in Abuja at the end of a workshop held at the centre, said that converting the centre to the University of Mathematical Sciences would aid in the teaching and learning of mathematics-related courses.

According to Mebine, the centre was established in 1988 and has 127 hectares of land with a lot of resources, but had yet to fulfil its mandate.

He said, “For the centre to fulfil its mandate effectively, it has to be converted to the National University of Mathematical Sciences.

“We don’t want to run undergraduate programmes, but postgraduate degree programmes, masters degree programmes, and PhD programmes,” Mebine stated.

He explained that the programmes would be in the five programmes of the centre, namely, “Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Statistics, and Mathematical Sciences Education.”

Speaking further, Mebine noted that the centre had written to the NUC on reasons why it needed to be upgraded.

Also speaking at the event, Dr Jimoh Ajani, who represented the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, noted that the NUC would review the request by the centre.

This is as he also hailed the President, Bola Tinubu, for his deep love for the education sector.
